PALAMPUR


Palampur (1219m), just  35 km from Kangra is a quiet  town situate on a plateau with the backdrop of the dramatic Neugal chasm and the Bundla stream cutting across on one edege, Surrounded by green tea estates and forests of pine and deodar, Palampur has several interesting trails for travelers to trek. Some of these paths leading to the hill are often used by Gaddis the nomadic shepherds of the area. With a number of interesting areas in the vicinity, angling in the river Bundla, or hang gliding and paraglind at Billing – Bir 35 kms away  Palampur is an inviting destination for travelers old and young.  

 

Neugal Khad : Situated close to Palampur is the dramatic Bundla chasm where the river spills through the gorge in splendid fury during the monsoons.

 

The Saran Kalia an Vihar is another interesting place worth a visit.

Andretta : The charming village once home to the famous painter Sardar Sobha Singh and playwright Ms. Norah Richards, is now a centre for varied artistic activities, Well know for pottery, Andretta must be visited by all those with an interest in the art from.

 

 

 

Baijnath : Noted for ancient temple built in 804 AD, Baijnath (16km) is dedicated to Lord Shiva Vaidyanath, its tall shikhara, carved  carved in capped peaks of the Dhauldhar range, The Linga enshrined in its sanctum is one of the 12 Jytirlingas in the country . Every year during the Shivratri fair, thousands of pilgrims descend on Baijnath to enjoy the colourful fair and festivals.

Bir and Billing : Sheltered by the mountains and surrounded by tea gardens, Bir serves as a playground for hang para gliders and is well known for its Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan handicrafs. One of the best aero sport sites in the world. Billing is 14 kms away from Bir. With the mountain ranges serving as a amphitheatre, Bir Billing offer great opportunities for high altituede and cross country flying for a stretch that extends to 200 kilometers.
